Minimise Moving Mayhem

Disclosure: This is a collaborative post.

Moving house always seems like such a great idea in theory and then the practicalities start becoming more real. In fact, moving house can feel stressful and at times even a little overwhelming. There’s a lot to be said about getting the whole buying and selling process done in one go but the worry that a chain is going to collapse is a whole heap of anxiety.

That’s why, in this blog, we’re exploring the option of getting off the well-trodden path of buying and selling and looking at an alternative route to make that house move just a little bit easier.

Off The Chain

There are times when you’re stuck in the sell/buy system and you’re really at the mercy of others when it comes to the sale going through higher up and indeed further down the chain. It can be frustrating, not least because you have so little control over the situation.

Many buyers nowadays are opting out of the buy/sell chain gang and allowing themselves some breathing space. Instead of making an offer and hoping for a simultaneous completion dates they opt instead to sell their own property and either downsize to a furnished rental for a few months or move in with relatives where they can start the buying process at their own pace.

There are, of course, both advantages and disadvantages to this. On the plus side as a chain free buyer you are a more attractive proposition to a seller who wants the sale to go through as soon as possible. With nothing holding you back and with a mortgage in place, all that’s left is a little bit of paperwork to go through and you’re done. If you’re living with family, you’ll likely be saving money too.

On the downside, you will probably have to pay for your belongings to go into Self storage while your search for a new property and that cost can add up. However, if you’ve moved yourself there a little bit at a time you may save money on hiring a big removal firm.

Renting a property can be an expensive business with many rents costing even more than  mortgage repayments, so you’ll want to limit how long you’re renting for.

Unique to You

However you choose to move house will be unique to you and your circumstances, but knowing there is more than one option out there is a helpful way of approaching the whole process. The time spent waiting for news of your sale and your purchase can be short and intense or drawn-out and stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. By giving yourself all the time you need, you can make the process a much calmer, if not longer one. This approach might not suit everyone but when it comes to avoiding stress, it’s always worth considering your options.

Take time to research your move today and find a way that keeps moving mayhem to a minimum.
