It may have been the garden that got us through the door but we fell in love with the house almost immediately. I can’t quite put my finger on it but it was just that feeling that for some reason we were home, we both felt it.
It certainly wasn’t the decor, as after being empty for almost 18 months, it didn’t make the best first impression. Something that ultimately worked in our favour as I think a lot of people were put off by our little ugly duckling.
Over the summer I was organising our photos and found the original pictures we took off the house after our offer had been accepted but before any work had been done. Here’s a little before tour of our forever home.
The Lounge
The front door does open straight into the living room which was a concern for us but there is an inner hallway in the middle of the house and we both loved the quirkiness of it. The living room was so dark despite the afternoon sun streaming in.
I think the house had us straight away with the open fire.
The Dining Room
The dining room was part of the original house which dates back to the 1850’s. I love the character in the features and the curved window.
The Kitchen
The kitchen was part of an extension which was built approximately 10 years before we bought it. It looks quite a bit different now!
The Master Bedroom
The main bedroom was fairly plain but the balcony gave it the wow factor, something that had been on our “wouldn’t it be amazing to have” list.
O’s Bedroom
This has and will always be my favourite room in the house. It’s such a cosy room and I love the view from the front window.
Another original feature of the house is this corner window, if you look in the bottom right of the pics you can just see the architects drawings for the extension. We’ve kept them as a little souvenir.
The Dressing Room
This is the darkest room in the house, the window in North facing so it never gets any sun. Such a shame as it is a lovely little space.
The Spare Room
Yes, that is a painted dragon on the wall!
The Main Bathroom
The tiles weren’t to our taste (that may be a mild understatement) but the bath was a keeper.
The En-Suite
There is a shower to the right behind the door and as an en-suite it is a good size, although if you’re on the tall side you will bump your head on the sloping ceiling.
The Utility Room and Downstairs Bathroom
I’m guessing this was unfinished.
The previous owners did have four children so it must have made sense to have a folding down changing unit built into the downstairs toilet.
The first time we walked round we were both quiet, taking in every room and then we both stood at the front and looked at each other. My husband asked me the inevitable questions, “so, what do you think?” My response was “I think it could be amazing” and for us it really is. It’s our forever home and we love it dearly.
Pop back next week for what the downstairs looks like now.
Oh wow, I can see why you fell in love – those windows! But I’m guessing you don’t have the same taste as the previous owners 🙂 Will be popping back next week for sure to see what it looks like now.

I’m looking forward to seeing more next week! I need to start being more imaginative when I look at properties and hopefully this will inspire me. Where we live the house prices have gone completely crazy, so I think we’re going to need to have a bit of vision and take on a project if we ever want to move. #HomeEtc

I just love older houses, so quirky with all their nooks and crannies. I can totally understand why you fell for this house and I’m so glad you did, I think houses have soul and they all deserve owners to love them and treat them
I adore the curved window in the dining room, and the exposed brick work too. The house seems to have so much character!
I can’t wait to see what you have done with it! Xxx #HomeEtc

Aah it’s lovely 🙂 We have a house with beams too — weirdly, it was something that was on the top of our ‘no’ list to begin with but our little house totally put pay to that!! We were captivated by it 🙂 Not sure it’s my ‘forever house’ though — so happy you’ve found yours 🙂 Thanks so much for linking up to #HomeEtc

This post actually made me cry. This is such a great foundation for what obviously has become a wonderful family home and like you we live in our forever home but haven’t had to do half as much to it as you. I love how lived in that house was/is and how much history there is, how much the walls have seen. That home will always be amazing x
