Back to Work

One of my favourite things about my job is the 6 week summer holiday (haha, show me a teacher who doesn’t say that), but since having Baby O it has put me in a really fortunate position.  It gives me the opportunity to experience being a stay at home mum with my son.  As the new school year is rapidly approaching I feel like I’m returning from maternity leave and all of those anxieties from 12 months ago are starting to resurface.  So time to put it into perspective and focus on the postives (and a few negatives) of going back to work on Monday.

What I won’t miss about being at home:

  1.  I can go to the supermarket on my own.  Instead of having the embarrassing battle to try and persuade Baby O to sit in the trolley seat, I can browse at a leisurely pace round the aisles on my way home.
  2. I will not have to have Peppa Pig in the background for several hours of my day.  There are too many episodes I now know all the words too, and I find Peppa far too bossy, but it is Baby O’s favourite so it stays on.
  3. I won’t feel guilty for sitting having a cup of tea, thinking I should be doing some exciting and educational activity with O, instead of letting him drive his big digger round the dining room floor.
  4. Cooking! During the hols I seem to spend my life cooking, 3 meals a day for O, then dinner for hubby when he gets home, plus breakfast and lunch for me.  Life seems to revolve around meal times.  Don’t get me wrong, I do quite like cooking but it’s never ending!
  5. I can go to the toilet without an audience (enough said).

Okay, a few things I won’t miss about being a SAHM, but there are also a lot of things I will:

  1. Lazy mornings.  One of the loveliest things about being off work is not having to rush around to get everyone ready and out of the house for 7:45.  I love getting Baby O from his cot, bringing him into our bed for milk, cuddles and Milkshake knowing we’ve got nowhere to be.
  2. Long cuddles on the couch for no reason other than we wanted a half hour snuggle (Baby O loves his cuddles)
  3. Naptime! Yes, I love that hour or so when O has his nap and I have some me time to watch Diagnosis Murder with a brew.  Guilty pleasure but I love Dick Van Dyke!
  4. Energy.  Don’t get me wrong looking after O is tiring but in a different way to battling several classes of 30 teenagers a day and then coming home, making dinner, getting O to bed before getting the marking and planning out for the next day.
  5. Baby O.  I will miss just being with him, seeing his face, hearing his voice, watching him look around taking everything in. He fascinates me and I’m in awe of him and as he gets another day older I fall in love with him just a little bit more.

So, as we make our early start on Monday morning to get out of the house on time I know I’ll be sad to be missing Bananas in Pyjamas, but at the same time looking forward to a coffee and chat with the girls from work.  Oh well, only 7 weeks until half term!

That’s the bonus, I can fit a quick gym session in on the way home (or go home and get an hours sleep before nursery pick up 🙂 )

Good luck with going back to school. Here’s hoping your new class is great to teach and that Baby O has extra smiles when you arrive home.

This is such a lovely post and such a positive spin – lovely. I also admit to Diagnosis Murder being a Guilty Pleasure and have been been known to sky+ it!!! #archiveday

I once ditched uni for the afternoon because the concluding episode of a 2 parter was on (hangs head in shame!)
