The Forever Home – Next Steps

It’s been quite a while since I’ve written a home post, and there is actually a really good reason.  Behind the scenes there have been some very exciting plans taking place which, if everything goes smoothly, will mean some very big changes to our forever home.

I have mentioned before that we fell in love with the house almost immediately.  It was one of those feelings that is quite hard to  describe but the house just felt like home.  It was far from perfect but we loved it’s quirky features and traditional cottage style.  As the house had been empty for a year and a half we spent the first few months of owning it living with our parents as we renovated inside.

Almost eight years on from when we first picked up the keys life for us has changed considerably.  We are now married and have two lovely little boys and, being perfectly honest, the interior is looking a little tired.  It could do with a lick of paint and a lot of the interiors that came with us from our previous home are no longer to our taste.  I would love to be decorating but those plans are on hold because something bigger is on the horizon.

A couple of months ago we put in planning permission for a two storey extension on the back of the house.  Over the past few years we have realised that we don’t make the best use of the back of the house, especially the views of the garden, and one home feature we always wanted was a large kitchen/dining/living space.  The downstairs is currently open plan but with separate areas and as there is only a small back door to exit to the garden it can be quite dark, even in the middle of summer.

The new extension means that we will be able to bring the outside inside with the addition of some bi-folding doors which given that we will soon have both boys running around will make it the perfect family area.  I can already see myself with a glass of wine in hand, lounging on a new corner sofa whilst my boys play football in the garden in the afternoon sunshine.

We won’t be starting any work until 2018 and it’s slightly daunting what a big job this will be.  We may have to move out whilst the major building work is being done, the alternative being that we revamp our wardrobes with some quality protective clothing like those from Engelbert Strauss to keep us safe whilst we live amongst the chaos.

We are preparing ourselves for a few months of upheaval in 2018, but the end result will be more than worth the wait.

My friend did a similar thing not long ago and it’s made such a huge difference to her house. The space is just amazing and they now pretty much just live in it. It sounds very exciting!
