There’s always a but, isn’t there? I really do love my kitchen, it is one of my favourite rooms in the house but if I were to change anything it would be the amount of light that comes into the room. The window is East facing which means that we get the sunlight streaming in first thing in the morning, but by midday the sun is over the top of the house and it can get a little dark.
It doesn’t help that there is a ledge above the kitchen window which limits the light that gets in once the sun is higher in the sky. When we first came to visit the house the kitchen was dark and felt cramped despite being in a large room.
We have tried to lighten the room as much as possible with the use of cream cupboards and light wooden worktops, and kept the floor as pale as possible and this has made a huge difference in brightening up the room.
In a perfect world I would love to extend the kitchen out the back a little to create a seating area at the the back of the house, with sliding doors that could be pushed back to bring the garden into the house. Another item on the top of my list would be the addition of skylights, like those from VELUX, to maximise the natural light flooding into the room. It is something the husband and I have discussed but the balcony ledge above the kitchen prevents this from being a realistic option. Oh well, a girl can dream!
