Moba Moses Basket Review

When I found out I was expecting our second child there was very little that we needed to buy as I had kept almost everything from when we had O.  Items were stored away in the garage, outside shed and in the attic so as we got closer to my due date we started to retrieve the newborn essentials from their hiding places.  One of the items we had put into the attic was the Moses basket.  The basket I had spent hours choosing first time round.

When it was pulled out of the black bin bags that had been protecting it my heart sank.  It looked a bit grubby (even after washing what could be washed) and leaned awkwardly to one side.  I just couldn’t bring myself to put my brand new baby in it.  I know that some people feel that Moses baskets can be a waste of money as they aren’t in the very long but for me they are an absolute essential.  O was a small baby and he was in his until almost 4 months old, he napped in it during the day and slept in it at night.  With it looking likely that baby two was also going to be fairly small it was something that I felt we needed to replace.

The search was on.  As I browsed the internet the wicker baskets with the frilly linings that I had loved four years ago just didn’t appeal to me.  I wanted something different, something a little more modern looking.  When someone on Twitter suggested I take a look at Moba baskets I headed over to their website, and fell in love.

Moba are described as the Contemporary Moses Basket and they really are.  I loved their modern and minimalist look and the baskets are available in a range of stunning colours.  To match our little boys nursery I opted for the Dove Grey colour and white stand.  I was delighted when they arrived as they looked perfect in the room.

As well as looking great what also appealed to me was how easy the basket would be to clean.  The white lining of the basket can be easily removed and then it can be completely wiped down, something that can’t be done with a more traditional wicker basket.  As newborns are prone to a bit (or a lot) of sickness this was a big advantage.  The holes in the sides of the basket also mean that it is fully ventilated which helps to prevent overheating, another bonus when having a summer baby.

I find myself moving the basket around constantly.  Bringing it downstairs during the day, back upstairs at bedtime and often into the dressing room when I am getting ready (G loves the sound of the hairdryer and the noise often soothes him if he’s being a bit grouchy).  As the basket is extremely light and has sturdy integrated handles this has been really easy to do, even in the early post c-section days.

G loves being held and to feel as though he is being held.  One thing I have loved about the Moba basket is that it’s big enough for me to be able to pop his poddle pod in for naps during the day.  Having the pod in the basket means he is really easy to move around as I can just pick him up using the handles rather than trying to pick up the whole pod, which actually I’m not even sure I could do safely.

We have been lucky to have been blessed with two little boys who love their sleep and at almost two months old G still has plenty of growing room in his basket and we will be using it until he no longer fits in it.  I love having my little boy next to me during the night and I often find myself slipping my hand through the handle of the basket to rest it on his chest as he sleeps.  As it isn’t made of wicker I don’t have to worry about the creaking of it waking him up!

I can’t finish without a quick mention for the bottom sheets for the mattress.  I ordered one in Dove Grey to match the colour of the basket.  I only ordered one as I wanted the colour to match and thought how different could a sheet be from the plain white ones I had already bought.  Well, the difference is amazing, the Moba bedding is so much better quality and feels so much nicer.  It has now been washed many, many times as I try to use that one as much as possible.  The white ones are now only being used as a back up.

We have been delighted with our Moba basket.  Our little man is happy in there, we’re happy that it looks so beautiful in our home and I’m happy that I can move G around easily when he’s in it.  We aren’t planning any more children but if we were I’m sure I wouldn’t be disappointed puling this down from the attic.

It’s a really lovely basket and just so stylish too. I think it would make such a lovely present for a newborn too wouldn’t it? I haaaated that my old wicker one used to creak. So annoying. Looks like a special find!

I remember loving our old one when I picked it out but it started to lean to one side where I would peak over the edge to check on O. I absolutely hated it when we got it down from the attic, a “what were you thinking when you bought that” moment. xx

It is so beautiful!! So much nicer than a traditional wicker Moses basket and I am loving all the photos of baby boy in it. Lucas hated with moses basket and hardly slept in it and then we didn’t have room for them with the twins – I think this one would convince me to give them a go again though. He certainly looks happy in it xx

It’s gorgeous isn’t it? I’m so chuffed with it and seeing as G is a little on the small side it looks like we’ll be using it for a few more weeks yet! xx

Hello! Just stumbled across your blog whilst looking for reviews of the Moba basket. Thank you for writing this, it really is a gorgeous basket and definitely the top of my list! I was actually wondering if I could be a bit cheeky and ask where that lovely tree wallpaper is from please? It’s lovely! Thank you, Laura xx

Hi, thanks for commenting and not cheeky at all. It’s a Cole and Son wallpaper called Woods and Stars, I got mine through wallpaper direct. It is really lovely paper, looks gorgeous in the nursery. xx

This review of the moba was so helpful – thank you! I’m curious where you got the stand in the photo above? I would love to find something similar to complement the basket. I can’t seem to find it on the company’s website.

Hi! Thanks for your review, very helpful, shopping for a moses basket for my first baby. Do you suggest also getting a Sleepyhead (otherwise known as docatot or cocoonbaby – basically one of those little baby pods) in addition to the moses basket or is that too much stuff in one bassinet?

I wouldn’t say that you need one straight away, I’d wait and see how your baby sleeps. My eldest was more than happy in just a Moses basket but G loves to feel close to something (he still does now at just turned 1) so it really helped him to sleep. All babies are different and the Sleepyheads they can be quite pricey if your baby doesn’t like it, so may want to wait before buying. Glad to hear you liked the review. xx

    Thanks for the review.
Do you need a spare cover, mattress and sheets for if (when) the baby is sick?

    Thanks
